The Jewish Museum is devoted exclusively to the scope and diversity of 4,000 years of art and Jewish culture
In the spring of 2008, the buzz will be about its extraordinary Abstract Expressionism show, which will feature paintings by such celebrated names as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Helen Frankenthaler. The intellectual foundation will be provided by the divergent perspectives of two major art critics––Clement Greenberg and Harold Rosenberg––who shaped mid-century thinking about post-war art. In viewing these key paintings through the prism of these writers’ perspectives, visitors will gain new insights into 20th-century art.
Another factor in the Museum’s leadership role is its renowned collection, which now totals more than 26,000 objects. The collection is constantly being refreshed with new artworks, and, in fact, an important acquisition just went on display: a suite of mid 20th-century works created by renowned architect Philip Johnson and noted Abstract Expressionist sculptor Ibram Lassaw for Congregation Knese Tifereth Israel, a Port Chester synagogue.
