Pace Wildenstein held a benefit last night at it’s New York Chelsea gallery, featuring Chuck Close and magician Mark Mitton. The panel, “Seeing is Believing: The Art of Shaping Perception” focused on ‘illusion’. Illusion by sleight of hand; illusion in art. ‘The most magical illusion’, according to Close is making space where there is no space. Making art, painting, has a performative aspect and without an audience, ‘it ain’t there’ opines Close. Like his former classmates at Yale, (Richard Serra among them) he believes that art is a process. Find a process, keep doing it, get good at it and it will set you free.
Close’s favorite artist of all time? Vermeer. ‘His work looks like he just blew paint, breathed life onto the canvas’.
Another seminar in the fall will examine the role of the brain and neuroscience and painting. Stay tuned.
