Rubber Sentinels of Broadway

The Sentinels, five large-scale sculptures constructed from rubber tires and stainless steel tubing, stand watch over the Garment District. Designed by Chakaia Booker, the installation is presented by the Garment District Alliance and embodies the neighborhood’s growth into an artistic epicenter.

The impressive sculptures were first designed digitally and then constructed with the help of an engineer and Booker’s fabricator Alston Van Putten Jr.; the artist manipulates the tires with power tools prior to attaching them to the stainless steel frames. The construction of the works looks as much to durability as to aesthetic.

Chakaia Booker’s The Sentinels will remain on view along Broadway between 36th and 41st Streets in NYC’s Garment District through November 2014.
