Ai Wei Wei at the Brooklyn Museum

Ai Wei Wei is known to be one of the most controversial and provocative Chinese contemporary artists of his time. His career has spanned over 20 years, and now at the Brooklyn Museum you can see a vast exhibition of his works that reflect the topics of culture, history, politics and tradition that the artist has so beautifully touched upon over the last couple decades. He is a photographer, sculptor, activist and architect, and all of these traits have been highlighted in the exhibition.

The exhibition discusses issues of freedom to express, human and individual rights and a focus on dualities between the East and West. His arrest and detention in 2011 has only made his opinions that much more intriguing to his audience. In a sense, he is a rebel with a cause and this exhibition shines on his career as he speaks through his art. Because the artist was not able to travel to the States, due to his passport confiscation, many galleries and organizations came together to make this exhibition a possibility.  He is an artist that allows us to live in history- for his works  will definitely be remembered for years upon years to come.

Check out Ai Wei Wei’s work at the Brooklyn Museum on view from April 18- August 10.
