Artlog "Connect" – Holiday Art

December 16, 2009

Hey Artloggers, welcome to the Weekly Connect Newsletter. With the holidays upon us, we present to you tips for buying affordable art in the city. Williamsburg, Dumbo and the Lower East Side are three of the neighborhoods where you can explore 15-20 emerging art galleries in just a few hours. Don't just take our advice for it, before you head out visit Artlog.com to create your own neighborhood art guide & itinerary.

In the city, head to the LES for a visit to established galleries like Woodward, James Fuentes and Sloan Fine Art who often deal in big names like Warhol, but also represent an impressive array of emerging artists. Newcomers and trendsetters like Rachel Uffner, Lisa Cooley and Invisible-Exports, whose Artist of the Month Club is making quite a splash in the art world, are well worth a visit. For affordable photography and fine art, a LES must is the Jen Bekman Gallery located just one block from the New Museum. Her popular website, 20x200, lets you purchase incredible fine art and photography at price points ranging from $20 to $2,000 without ever leaving the couch!

In Williamsburg, within a ten block radius off the famous Bedford St. L stop, you can find some of the hottest local artists at Like the Spice, Front Room, and Cinders or artists from around the world at Pierogi, Causey Contemporary or Slate. In Dumbo, just south of Williamsburg, you can visit 111 Front St. and see up to 20 galleries on a single floor. Many of the galleries like Randall Scott, Klompching, Kris Graves and Caption represent a wide array of fabulous photographers.

Cristina Vergano - Just for You

@Woodward Gallery (LES) thru 1/9
Pop Art’s influence emerges in many of Vergano's surreal paintings in the form of reversed talk balloons or Lichtenstein paintings taken out of context. This ironic, graphic imagery playfully offset scenes Vergano painted in the classical style. Several paintings also represent Vergano’s recent obsession with Picasso.

Chris Berens: The Only Living Boy in New York

@Sloan Fine Art (Opens 12/16)
Berens began having visions of the ethereal world he paints when he was still a child. After graduating from the Academy of Art and Design in ‘s-Hertogenboschm Netherlands, he set up makeshift studios in several semi-abandoned buildings near his childhood home and set out to reproduce the images in his mind. Unable to render them with any straightforward technique, Berens created his own complex method. For each work, the artist begins by painting small scenes and figures in ink, bistre and varnish on glossy paper. The images remain wet for days as Berens perfects and repeats them, creating multiple versions of each image on a page. Once completed, he cuts up each sheet, reserves the desirable elements and peels away the clear coating layer from the underlying paper. The remaining semi-transparent images are stacked, layered and collaged onto panel to create the final work.
