Paul Laster commented: Art Basel Miami Beach opened to a smart-dressed crowd of VIPs, collectors, and the press on Tuesday afternoon. Bigger than ever, we kept getting lost as we tried to navigate the labyrinth-like arrangement of gallery booths. Eventually we stopped trying to plot a direction and just followed our eye, wandering from one aisle to the next while spotting noteworthy work here and there. Things that didn’t really look like art stood out, such as Michael Beutler’s gigantic rag rug at Galleria Franco Soffiantino. After believing we had seen everything, which wasn’t really the case, we dropped into the VIP lounge for champagne and nibbles, courtesy of Cartier. Jeffrey Teuton commented: By and far I think PULSE had the best vibe of all the fairs this year in Miami. There was an energy created by the diverse work brought forth by exhibitors that highlighted solid talent that did not feel stale and pre canned. As an exhibitor, (I am Associate Director of Jen Bekman Gallery, www.jenbekman.com) it was a pleasure to be surrounded by work that I felt was not pandering to the audience or completely safe. While I wish there had been more coverage as far as press goes, that is strictly because I feel that many missed the nudge that would have gotten them a great fair and even better work. As the fair mentioned below I think the addition of the People's Choice Award and Live tweeting was an excellent way to introduce a level of participation and voice to those at the fair and really work on engaging the visitors. All this combined is what I think made PULSE stand far above other fairs and make it one of the few venues you wanted to spend time and make it through the whole fair.

heidi lee commented: This years 8th annual Art Basel Miami Basel showed signs of optimism as confident buyers strode through the halls of the enlarged Convention Center and snatched up choice work. The usual suspects were there schmoozing with dealers, John McEnroe, Pharell Williams, Valentino, and Steve Wynn. One unusual suspect was Sylvester Stallone however, whose paintings were on view at Gymurzyska Gallery which incidentally had $6 million dollars worth of art seized by US Marshalls minutes before the fair opening due to an insurance dispute. The art was returned two days later. Over 2 billion dollars of art was on view, 40,000 visitors came, 2,000 artists and 266 dealers presented, and a dozen satellite fairs complemented it, ABMB is THE largest art fair in the world. Major works of art sold including Kehinde Wiley's Michael Jackson painting, a video porn room by Santiago Sierro, Ai Wei Wei's ceramic cube, and many others. 43% percent of galleries described their sales as ``much better than expected" with only 18% saying sales met or fell short of expectations this year. According to the Miami Herald, established galleries were able to sell prized works to so-called cash-strapped collectors and I witnessed many first time collectors buying art. ABMB also experience their first "terrorist" scare. A covert attempt to sabotage the fair happened when a tall thin man released thousands of ladybugs in the VIP lounge. An art collector was grabbed by fair officials for questioning and then quickly released when they realized they had the wrong guy. Needless to say the collector was very unhappy. The ladybug perpetrator was never caught but they did not rule out that I could have been an artist doing a bad art stunt..Not everything is art. ~Heidi Lee, Heidi Lee Art Advisory (www.heidileeartadvisory.com)

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair commented: This year’s PULSE Miami was an all-around success: our exhibitors reported healthy sales from the Private Preview Brunch on Thursday until our closing on Sunday, from major collectors and museums, to first-time collectors. The new venue at the Ice Palace proved terrific for our exhibitors and visitors. We had an enthusiastic response to the outdoor projects we presented such as the Miami debut of PULSE Performance and its music series, as well as special programs throughout the fair like the launch of Artlog Live and the People’s Choice Award.
