Laurent Grasso often explores shifting and multiple temporalities in his conceptual art practice. For his project at the Bass Museum of Art, Grasso selects and juxtaposes historical works from our permanent with his own series of paintings, sculptures, videos and neons to form unexpected connections that become reflections on the past from a contemporary viewpoint. For example, in Grasso’s series of paintings entitled Studies into the Past, the artist employs techniques and incorporates imagery from 17th and 18th century Flemish and Italian paintings. These works demand a second glance as they could easily be mistaken for a painting from another time period. In turn, Grasso uses this simulacrum to blur the line between the historical and contemporary.
