“Fresh from his successful collaboration in San Francisco with The Goldmine Shithouse, McCaig Welles and Rosenthal are pleased to present a solo exhibition by Travis Lindquist. In his latest collection of works Lindquist has created haunting, sophisticated portraits by reinterpretating historical figures in a contemporary context. He has created his own iconography and visual language through figures he has researched. These subjects are not standard icons like the oversaturated images of Che, Mao, and Obama, instead they are depictions of anarchist, free masons, cult leaders and followers, that Lindquist has elevated to iconic stature through his representation of them.

At the crux of the exhibition is the duality of good and evil, light and dark. The complex and dynamic nature of the human spirit is discovered through subject matter and formalist elements. The portraits are deeply layered with a shadowy air, overlaying text and expressive brush strokes. A darker palate is a noticeable component that lends itself to the nature of the subjects.

Yet through the darkest of nights, day always breaks?

Travis Lindquist recently moved from New York City to Los Angeles, where he now currently lives and works. He received his diploma from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. and his BFA from Tufts, in Boston, MA. He has exhibited in New York, London, Miami, Berlin, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Stockholm. This is the second solo show with McCaig Welles Rosenthal.”
