For economic and creative reasons, many if not most artists of the Renaissance and Baroque made drawings for sculpture and the decorative arts. Recent scholarship focuses not only on the aesthetic merit of these designs but also on the ways in which they were actually used. This exhibition comprises drawings for three dimensional objects to be executed in a range of media including metal, wood, glass, ceramics, and stone. Particular attention is given to how the form of the design reflects the function and the processes by which two-dimensional drawings were transferred to three-dimensional objects.
