About

Through a selection of historical and contemporary photographs of Beijing, this exhibition will deepen our understanding of China as we take a photographic tour through Beijing, traveling to ancient and contemporary sights to experience the vast achievements that define the breathtaking city of Beijing of yesterday and today.

Beijing, the capital of China, is a city full of history, serving as the national capital since the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368). When Marco Polo visited the city, he was amazed, commenting that the city had no comparison in the world. Having served as the capital through the last two feudal dynasties, the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911), Beijing retains its fascinating allure, characterized by its architecture and life customs. Designed to welcome the 29th Olympic Games, Beijing’s new buildings, such as the Bird Nest built as the main Olympic Games facility, and its broadened streets, will present a New Beijing to the world. Beijing will now draw even more worldwide attention, and start a new era for China.

The 29th Beijing Olympic Games will be a milestone in Chinese history, and to celebrate this special occasion, China Institute is pleased to collaborate with the Beijing Archive Bureau to organize a special exhibition: Beijing 2008: A Photographic Journey.
